Universal Children’s Day

We’re celebrating Universal Children’s Day by saying a big congratulations to a brother and sister from Tamworth after they were crowned winners of our Keep Me Safe home safety design competition.

Imogen and Jacob Smith, who attend Nethersole C of E Academy in the town, took the prizes in Keep Me Safe. The safety-conscious siblings’ posters were judged the best by award-winning children’s illustrator Nick East from the hundreds received from across the country.

As a result, Nethersole C of E Academy will be £2,000 better off – money that the school can use for additional arts and crafts materials. Imogen and Jacob will also receive goody bags ahead of Christmas.

Jacob’s original poster design featured the word SAFETY spelled out in large, bold, colourful letters, with each letter being used to describe an aspect of home safety.

Imogen’s, meanwhile, focused on house fires and the vital importance of having a working smoke alarm in the home.

Judge Nick East says: “The standard from the children was very high indeed, it’s been such a pleasure seeing their work.

“Jacob got across a very clever message, with a clear layout and lovely, well thought out illustrations.

“Imogen used fantastic, bold colours and a simple, strong message.

“All the children who entered should be very proud of their contribution to improving home safety across the country.”

Jacob, 11, says of his winning design: “Home safety isn’t something people think about every day, but I really hope my poster with the word SAFETY standing for so many different things, will help make a bit of a difference.”

Sister Imogen, seven, adds: “I had lots of fun doing the poster and it’s so exciting to think my poster will be on the wall in lots of peoples’ houses.”

Our network of 5,000 engineers will distribute the winning poster designs to customers’ homes across the winter months.

Peter Southcott, chief executive of CORGI HomePlan, says: “The creativity on display has been fantastic and the awareness children have of home safety is the most reassuring thing of all.

“CORGI HomePlan is all about keeping our customers safe and warm and with Imogen and Jacob’s fantastic posters, we have found a new, eye catching way of getting that message across.

“Congratulations and thank you to everyone who entered.”
